Voices of families

We are very lucky to have so many of our families write blogs for us, describing what day-to-day life is like, both the highs and the lows, in their own words.

Family Fund Business Services

Family Fund Business Services (FFBS) is the trading subsidiary of Family Fund, launched in 2012 to generate income for Family Fund by sharing our grant administration and fulfilment expertise with other charities and local authorities. Its growth over the last five years has provided Family Fund with a valuable source of sustainable, unrestricted income to improve and expand the range of support we offer families.

Throughout the year FFBS has continued to deliver its successful web-based B2B procurement portal and fulfilment service to support a diverse range of grant-making organisations across the UK. Their service provides a one-stop shop for hundreds of products and services, allowing local authorities, charities, benevolent organisations and housing providers to procure value for money goods and services for a wide range of beneficiaries.

FFBS continued to grow its portfolio of local authority, housing and charity customers. New contracts included Inclusion Housing, a Community Interest Company specialising in supported living accommodation for disabled adults; Officers’ Association and SSAFA, both large-scale military benevolent charities; and the National Benevolent Charity, which supports people living in poverty across the UK.

Their partnership with Northgate Public Services continued to go from strength to strength, as they began their fourth year providing fulfilment services to the Welsh Government Discretionary Assistance Fund. The programme has grown significantly, supporting over 49,000 applicants during 2017/18, with essential cash, kitchen appliances and furniture. Welsh Government has confirmed an additional £1 million grant funding during 2018/19, taking the fund to £8.4 million.

In 2017/18 FFBS generated over £403,436 in profits, providing a substantial amount of additional funding for Family Fund, totalling nearly £3 million over the past five years.

Customers grant spend increased by almost £1 million during 2017/18, ending the year at £12.78 million. This was largely due to the retention of existing contracts and increased spend throughout the year, reflecting the stability of their existing customer base and effectiveness of their fulfilment service.

FFBS secured a key contract in February 2018 to deliver the BBC Children in Need Emergency Essentials Programme from July 2018 for the next three years. It is a pivotal contract for them as they develop their end-to-end grant administration and fulfilment model, providing long term social value to both customers and their beneficiaries.

The impact of FFBS was recognised this summer, when Family Fund won the ‘Grantmaking and Funding’ category at the Charity Awards for establishing FFBS. The judges commented that the FFBS model “benefited so many different stakeholders. It saved taxpayer money, delivered better results for vulnerable people, and allowed the charity to do more for its own beneficiaries.”

In total, FFBS generated over £400,000 in profit last year, providing a substantial amount of additional funding for Family Fund, which totals nearly £3 million over the past five years.

"By choosing FFBS we’re also able to support the fantastic work of their charity, Family Fund, meaning that our work will make a difference to both our charities’ beneficiaries."
